Learning Through Making: Why Action Creates Understanding

Many people assume understanding comes before action.

We often believe we need to fully understand something before beginning. We want enough information, enough confidence, enough certainty, or enough preparation before taking the next step. While preparation can certainly be valuable, research in education and learning sciences suggests that understanding does not always develop first.

Sometimes understanding develops through action itself.

Educational theorists and researchers have long explored the relationship between experience and learning. Philosopher and educational reformer John Dewey argued that learning is not simply the accumulation of information but an active process involving experience, reflection, and interaction with the world around us.

Later work by David Kolb expanded on similar ideas through experiential learning theory, which proposed that learning often occurs through a cycle involving experience, reflection, conceptual understanding, and experimentation.

These ideas become particularly interesting when considered alongside creative work.

Creative processes rarely unfold in perfectly linear ways. Understanding often emerges through interaction—with materials, ideas, experiences, and the act of making itself. Questions appear during action that were not visible beforehand. Unexpected discoveries emerge through experimentation. Materials behave differently than anticipated. Assumptions become clearer when tested against reality.

Action can reveal relationships and discoveries that thinking alone cannot always provide.

Research in constructivist learning theories has similarly suggested that learners actively build understanding through interaction and engagement rather than passively receiving information. Learning, from this perspective, becomes something people construct rather than something simply delivered.

This matters because many people feel pressure to know before beginning.

We often delay action while waiting for clarity.

We wait until we feel prepared.

We wait until uncertainty disappears.

We wait until we know enough.

Yet sometimes action itself becomes the thing that creates clarity.

The Create phase is not focused on producing perfection.

It is focused on interaction.

Creating becomes a way of learning, questioning, and understanding.

Within Constructive Creativity™, creating may involve:

  • testing ideas

  • experimenting with materials

  • trying possibilities

  • noticing responses

  • learning through iteration

  • gathering information through action

The purpose is not simply producing an outcome.

The purpose is developing understanding.

Not every answer appears before beginning.

Sometimes understanding emerges through interaction, experimentation, and the act of making itself.
